Russell, Wolfe, Hertz, Starr, Fenton, Addy, Maxwell, Haffie, & Davey

BIOLOGY: Exploring the Diversity of Life offers:

A CANADIAN BIOLOGY TEXTBOOK DESIGNED FOR CANADIAN STUDENTS
• Biology highlights the work of Canadian scientists, uses examples of Canadian species, refers to Canadian regulations and institutions, and discoveries made by Canadians.

LEARNING PEDEGODGY DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND BIOLOGY AND EXPLORE THE DIVERSITY OF LIFE.
• Science that appears in textbooks is the product of people who have made careful and systematic observations, which led them to formulate hypotheses about these observations, and, where appropriate, design and execute experiments to test these hypotheses.  Biology illustrates this in each chapter through the People Behind Biology boxes, which are stories about how particular people have used their ingenuity and creativity to expand our knowledge of biology.
• While Biology is not simply chemistry, specific chemicals and their interactions can have dramatic effects on biological systems.  From water to progesterone, amanitin and DDT, each chapter features the activity of a relevant chemical though the Molecule Behind Biology boxes.
• Several chapters include boxed accounts of organisms thriving "on the edge" at unusual temperatures, pressures, radiation dosages, salt concentrations etc. These brief articles found in the Life on the Edge boxes explain how our understanding of "normal" can be increased through study of the "extreme".

IN-TEXT RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO STUDY SMARTER.
• Each chapter ends with topic-by-topic lists for student review, self-test questions, discussion questions, opportunities for experimental analysis, and more.
• Within each chapter, Study Break boxes encourage students to take a moment to review the material they have just covered.  These boxes were written by students on our Student Advisory Board that included students from the University of Western Ontario, University of Calgary and University of New Brunswick.  Who else would know students’ common pitfalls when studying Biology better than students?
• BioExperience Online Tutorials allow students to experience biology by com¬bining an inviting case study approach with interactive, multimedia learning resources and activities. The tutorials’ carefully-paced instruction—with embedded assessment and feedback—helps students grasp and compre¬hend biology’s core concepts. Each in-depth tutorial offers students an opportunity to approach a topic through a case study and a series of three lessons; each lesson reflects an increasing level of complexity and difficulty. Tutorials incorporate traditional 2D animations, 3D animations, videos, and interactive exercises—all designed to promote understanding among students with a variety of learning styles. A quiz after each lesson ensures that students are comfortable with the material and have the necessary foundation of understanding before moving on to more complex aspects of the concept.

ALL THE INTERACTIVITY AND POWER OF A REAL LAB, ONLINE
• With the realistic simulations of Virtual Biology Laboratory 3.0, students will feel like they’re in a real laboratory! Each of the 130 activities included in the 14 labs engages students in gathering data and performing experiments—giving you the opportunity to seamlessly integrate lab work into your biology course.
